Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel

From the genre Runt Makes Good, subdivision Epic Journey, comes this tale of Shade, the Silverwing bat, whose curiosity imperils his clan, and who gets separated from them on their southerly migration. Adventures ensue, including tagging up with a Brightwing named Marina, and an extended flight from two cannibalistic vampire bats. Oppel has a knack for spinning a yarn, and embellishes this one with much bat lore and mythico-religious overtones.
